Birdlife throughout Papua New Guinea is prolific. The most famous of bird species is the Bird of Paradise. There are only 43 known species of Birds of Paradise in the world, 38 are found in PNG.

Discovered by the Scottish collector, Andrew Goldie, in 1882, the Goldie's Bird of Paradise can only be found at the hill forests of Normanby and Ferguson islands of the D’Entrecasteaux Archipelago in Milne Bay.

Avid birdwatchers can visit the Sebutuya Conservation park located at Esa’ala’s Sebutuia ward on Fergusson island.

In other parts of Milne Bay, the Raggiana Bird of Paradise also widely known as the Kumul can be found in its natural habitat. Bird watching tours can be arranged on the ground with locals or prearranged through tour operators.
